Here is some information regarding one of the most popular H&S Accreditations, Chas.
What is CHAS?
Before you apply for the accreditation, here is all the information your need.
CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) is a pre-approval scheme, which allows contractors to demonstrate to potential Clients that they meet the required health and safety standards.
What Does CHAS Assess?
CHAS assesses:
- Your Health & Safety Policy Statement
- Your organisation of your health and safety
- Your specific health and safety arrangements to a standard which is acceptable to CHAS’s buyers and to others.
Is Your Business Ready to Apply for CHAS?
We get asked regularly by contractors and clients, about CHAS and whether they should apply.
We ensure that we give them the information they need to help make the decision on whether to become Chas Accredited.
Why Apply for CHAS?
Being Chas Accredited opens many doors.
It allows you to tender for your own work and when you get on the Chas database it allows others to contact you who are seeking competent companies to carry out work for them.
Another reason to become CHAS accredited is getting work with Local Authorities, hospitals, universities, schools or Principal Contractors.
Becoming Chas Accredited gives these companies the knowledge that you’ve gone through a vigorous H&S assessment by Chas and that you’ve passed this thus ensuring they will be using a company who are competent in regards to H&S.
CHAS can help you if, and when, you decide to apply for other accreditations such as Constructionline, Safecontractor etc.
It makes applying for these accreditations easier, as much of the health and safety sections do not need completing because you’re CHAS accredited.
What Do You Need to Apply for CHAS?
CHAS assesses all areas of your Health and Safety Management System and these are some of the key factors:
- Health and Safety Policy
- Organisation of health and safety
- Health and safety training
- Insurance details (Employers’ and Public Liability Insurance)
- Toolbox talks
- Training qualifications
- Maintenance records
- PAT testing
- Subcontractor competence
- Construction Phase Plan
- First aid training
- Staff inductions
- Health surveillance
- Audit
- Fire risk assessments
- Asbestos
You will also need to provide evidence of recent risk assessments, method statements and COSHH assessments.
Is it going to Cost a Lot of Time & Money?
There is a cost to becoming Chas Accredited but this cost will seem minimal once you have the opportunity to win large contracts by being on the Chas database.
In terms of time, if you’ve already got the documents required it will be quicker than if these require completing by us.
If you don’t have the required documents, and many companies haven’t then it will take longer. As we are experts in this field we can complete the process rather quickly as we have been completing Chas applications successfully for a large number of years
What are the Benefits for You & Your Business?
There are many benefits to becoming Chas Accredited. Potential to win more work, being able to demonstrate you are competent in regards to H&S, being able to miss out H&S sections of PQQ’s when tendering for work to name a few.
What Areas Do People Struggle With?
Not all companies submit suitable and sufficient H&S documents when they try to become Chas Accredited. This is through no fault of their own, its just that they don’t have the right experience, knowledge, skills and training to do it.
We ensure all the right documents are submitted and that the entire process of becoming Chas accredited is as seamless as possible.
Companies not having access to competent H&S advice as required by H&S Legislation is another common reason for failing a Chas assessment. We can help with this too.
